Introduction

Hello everyone!

My name is Nicole Contente and I am from Bristol, RI. I have a Bachelors of Fine Arts degree in Fashion Design from Syracuse University (class of 2022.) I am in my first year of my Masters of Art and Teaching program this year at RIC!


Since graduating (from Syracuse) I have been working at a marine canvas shop in Somerset Massachusetts, where I create covers, cushions, and other random items for boats/houses on an industrial walking foot sewing machine.

I have had many part time jobs throughout the years as well. I am the choreography director for my former high school's theater program, going on my 4th year now...(Legally Blonde is the show this year!). I am also a fall director for a 1st grade theater program as a school in town along with a instructor for beginner sewing classes at the rec. department in town!

I have shown my design work at a variety of fashion shows in the providence area the last few years, but now that I have started graduate school I have been sewing less for pleasure, and more for alterations to make some extra money in my "free time" ;)

I have always been involved in music since I learned to play the clarinet in 6th grade.  I have been a proud member of the Syracuse University Marching Band and still play in community wind ensembles over the summer and school year.  I have picked up other instruments along the way and have formed my own cover band where we play in town and the surrounding areas.  (Our next show is March 7th in Taunton if you're interested.)
Over the summer my best friend from college got married at her parents' home in New York and I was honored to be one of her bridesmaids.  Below is a photo of me at the wedding with my lovely boyfriend :)

               Before I begin, I appreciate how this writer prefaces the readers with his background and how he realizes that each reader might come from a different background than his.  He writes that along with privilege, "it is also an issue across differences of gender, sexual orientation, and numerous lesser divides." There are many different aspects as to why someone might not be friends with, hire, or consider them for a task just by looks or where they are from.                The quote I resonated with is "the glass ceiling that lets women see the executive suite but keeps them from being promoted..." because in my workplace, we have lost two of our (female) workers in the last year and haven't hired anyone new.  Other than my boss, there is one other male.  We don't know for sure but there are clues that the male gets paid the most, even though he hasn't been there the lon...

The Silenced Dialog by Lisa Delpit

  I had many (somewhat random) thoughts while reading this excerpt so I will try to make this short and sweet: One of the problems I always find while I am in the classroom or learning space is setting the correct tone of power and respect between the students and teacher/instructor.  It is very important to establish respect and "power" at the beginning but not in a harsh or mean tone.  I was taught while at my first job working for my local summer camp that you should always start out more strict and then ease up because it doesn't work the other way around.  A quote from a student in the reading claims "he was proud of the teacher's "meanness", an attribute he seemed to describe as the ability to run the class and pushing and expecting students to learn."  This is the level I believe teachers strive to be.  You can be strict and fun at the same time.  Establishing a routine or schedule for your classes will keep them on track and prepared for fu...
